Description
French Rope BasketEurope was devastated in the period after WWII, particularly in France.
In the Auvergne region of central France, to provide pocket money, children gathered straw and brambles on their way home from school and wove baskets in the evenings.
The baskets were sold in local markets at the weekends.
The children shaped the straw into long round lengths that were bound by long bramble stems. They then carefully stitched the lengths together to shape the baskets.
This basket is a large example of one of those baskets.
The basket stands to 8" high and is approximately 19" by 10".
