THE WHO 1979 Wembley Concert PosterThis is a high quality litho of the poster used to promote The Who's concert at Wembley Stadium in August of 1979. The opening acts (the 'Friends') consisted of Nils Lofgren, AC/DC, and The Stranglers. The 1979 tour was The Who's first tour since the death of Keith Moon supporting their 1978 album 'Who Are You'. Following Keith’s death in September 1978, The Who made the decision to continue as a band, recruiting former Small Faces and Faces drummer Kenney Jones. Keyboardist John 'Rabbit' Bundrick was also added to the lineup for live performances, adding another element to the band’s sound. At this show, a horn section was also introduced to the band's act for the first time. The new line-up received rave critical response and overwhelming fan support helping to propel the band's continuing success into the 80s.
The Who, one of the most influential rock groups of all time, have sold about 100 million records, and have charted 27 top forty singles in the UK and US, as well as 17 top ten albums, with 18 Gold, 12 Platinum and 5 Multi-Platinum album awards in the United States alone. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll hall of Fame in 1990, their first year of eligibility; the display describes them as "Prime contenders, in the minds of many, for the title of World's Greatest Rock Band." In 1979 The Who became the third band, after the Beatles and The Band, featured on the cover of Time. The article said they had "outpaced, outlasted, outlived and outclassed" all of their rock band contemporaries, and that "No other group has ever pushed rock so far, or asked so much from it." Rolling Stone magazine wrote: "Along with The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, The Who complete the holy trinity of British rock." They received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the British Phonographic Industry in 1988, and from the Grammy Foundation in 2001, for creative contributions of outstanding artistic significance to the field of recording.
This is a cool poster for a historic show in a crucial period for the band. The image is appropriate for the 'Lions of Rock', continuing to reign at the top of British Rock. This poster measures 13 x 19" and is in mint condition. FREE handbills included!
