    Description

August 17, 1958 - Chairman of the People's Republic of China Mao Zedong proclaimed the "Great Leap Forward" policy. It led to grave consequences and huge sacrifices, and the rejection of it became the forerunner of the reforms that turned into prosperity in modern China.
The "communization of the countryside", the smelting of steel in primitive furnaces, the elimination of household plots, famine, repression and numerous casualties - all these will become for China the policy of the "Great Leap Forward" proclaimed at the expanded meeting of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the CPC on August 17-30, 1958.
Having quarreled with the USSR, which by that time had abandoned the policy of Joseph Stalin, the head of the PRC, Mao Zedong, decided to demonstrate that he could become the leader of the communist world himself.
The idea behind the Great Leap Forward policy was Mao's desire to create modern industry in China at a rapid pace, relying on the "enthusiasm of the population." True, despite his dislike of the Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev, Mao partly took advantage of his slogan "catch up and overtake" America.
In addition, communes were created in the countryside, where people were forced out of the cities for exhausting work in the fields. As the author of the book "Mao Zedong" Whitney Stewart writes, "instead of one harvest a year, Mao wanted two."
Mao's main problem was that he always tried to move faster than possible ... He believed that he could achieve the triumph of communism faster than the Russians. It was an idea that warmed his soul. ''
The Great Leap Forward policy could have continued further, but the misfortune helped - floods in southern China again led to grain shortages and hungry peasants began to resist the authorities' policies. In the ruling CCP, a serious split has arisen over the continuation of the leap course.
Recognizing the excesses, Mao chose to step away from active politics, leaving the post of chairman of the PRC, although he retained the post of head of the CPC. With his tacit consent, China's leaders began a slow retreat from radical politics, which improved the situation. True, later Mao dealt with part of the party counter-elite during the Cultural Revolution.
